1. Erica Stoll’s wedding to Rory McIlroy:

Following the end of a few failed romances, the golfer finally found love with Erica Stoll, and the couple tied the knot in 2017. In December of that same year, they got engaged while on vacation in Paris. 

McIlroy and Stoll took their vows at an event at Ashford Castle, Galway, Ireland on April 22, 2017. Chris Martin, Niall Horan and Ryan Giggs attended the wedding, along with fellow golfers Sergio Garcia and Shane Lowry. According to Tim Schmitt, the wedding reportedly cost a staggering $1 million. Former Ryder Cup skipper Paul McGinley and three-time Major champion Padraig Harrington were a few prominent guests at McIlroy’s wedding in one of Ireland’s finest hotels  – the grounds of Ashworth Castle.  

McIlroy’s wedding took place at Saint Mary’s Church, on the grounds of Ashford Castle, County Mayo, West of Ireland which is an 800+ year old property and the most exquisite hotel in Mcllroy’s home country. For their wedding festivities, the couple booked this five-star hotel for five days.

Moreover, legendary entertainers Stevie Wonder and Ed Sheeran hosted the reception as well. After the ceremonies, the couple headed to the luxurious Sandy Lane hotel in Barbados, their first stop on their 10-day honeymoon.

2. Before their wedding, Rory didn’t volunteer or have good relationships: 

Before marrying McIlroy, Erica Stoll was responsible for championship volunteer operations. A fan of Manchester United Football Club and Ulster Rugby Club, McIlroy is an ambassador for the Irish National Committee for UNICEF.

Also prior to their marriage, Rory had several romantic issues as he infamously dumped her fiancé, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, over the phone in 2014. The media went wild when Wozniacki said on In Depth with Graham Bensinger: “I thought at least, you know, I’d have a one-on-one or something, but there was nothing…It was just a phone call, and I haven’t heard from her again”.

The breakup was complicated, and both Wozniacki and McIlroy spoke about it several times in the press. The Northern Ireland golfer was also linked to Meghan Markle before she settled down with the royal family.

Rory and Erica welcomed their first child, Poppy, on August 31, 2020. The athlete made the announcement days after the baby girl arrived via social media and thanked the team of doctors at Jupiter Clinical Middle in Jupiter, Florida. The baby’s full name is Poppy Kennedy McIlroy. Together, the family of 3 enjoy the home with a dog called Miss Lilly Belle.

Rory McIlroy actually met his bride while she was working at a PGA event. They had their first meeting in 2012 when McIlory overslept and was late for the Ryder Cup.

On the morning of the Ryder Cup, Stoll discovered that McIlroy had not left the hotel to play the course and might be late for his departure. Rory was awakened by Stoll and she helped McIlroy to avoid embarrassment as she arranged for the golfer to be taken by police to Medinah Country Club, Illinois. This led to years of friendship.
